Ministry of Environmental Affairs (Ministry) has endorsed a productive community-based plastic garbage management program. Minister of Environmental Affairs Balthasar Kambuaya stated that plastic garbage can be well-managed using garbage bank.

“The existence of garbage bank is essential as it provides a cleaner environment and economic advantage to the community,” said Balthasar.

Until recently, Balthasar has inaugurated over 1,000 garbage banks in all over Indonesia. Garbage bank can help to mobilize the economy in terms of money distribution or working force.

“Its economic value can reach Rp 13 billion [around US$1.11 million] to Rp 14 billion [ around US$1.20 million]. Not to mention that there are over one to two million people working in a garbage bank,” he said.
